What you need to know about weight, sleep and your health

March 02nd, 2015

National Sleep Awareness Week

If you are overweight, you could be putting yourself at risk for sleep deprivation and sleep apnea.

Sleep apnea is a condition where excess body weight can put pressure on the lungs and trachea, and causes a person to stop breathing during the night. This affects the quality of sleep one gets in the night and one’s ability to feel rested and awake throughout the rest of their day. This can make it difficult to concentrate on regular tasks and make sound decisions.

While excess weight is a factor, lack of sleep can also lead to many more health problems including stroke, heart disease and/or heart attacks. While weight loss for sleep apnea sufferers is ideal, it’s also twice as hard to motivate yourself to get any physical movement into your day or commit to new diet habits to try and lose weight when you’re tired. That is why medical professionals advise treatment of sleep apnea before attempting to start any new changes in physical activity or diet. Trying to make changes and not managing to stick to these goals because of fatigue can easily discourage you from making those changes ever again.

If you think you suffer from sleep apnea, visit your doctor and ask about treatment options and what steps you can make today toward wellness.
