Special enrollment to start March 15 for those who paid 2014 healthcare tax penalty

March 06th, 2015

If you hadn’t already heard, not having medical insurance coverage could affect your tax refund next year. But you may have another chance to avoid that penalty.

Although open enrollment ended last month for the general population, a special enrollment period will start on March 15 and end April 30 this year for those who had to pay the penalty fee on their taxes this year for not having insurance coverage last year.

You may still be able to get medical coverage and avoid the penalty for 2015 if you:

- Aren’t currently enrolled in coverage through the Health Insurance Marketplace for this year

- Paid the fee with your 2014 federal income tax return for not having health coverage in 2014

- Were confused or didn’t know about open enrollment dates for 2015 coverage, and need another opportunity to enroll in coverage for the remainder of 2015.

For more information about how Marketplace coverage affects your taxes, or need help with enrolling, speak with a Sun Life Outreach & Enrollment Specialist at (520) 381-0394. You may also visit www.HealthCare.gov/taxes, or call the Marketplace Call Center at (800) 318-2596 or (855) 889-4325.
