Sun Life expands to Florence

Sun Life expands to Florence

This month, Sun Life Family Health Center will be opening its eleventh office, and eighth family practice office in Pinal County.

Formally known as the Florence Clinic, this longtime privately-owned practice will officially open its doors to patients on Jan. 18 under the Sun Life name.

The expansion was made possible by grant monies that Sun Life received during Health Center week in August 2015 from the Dept. of Health and Human Services. A total of $169 million in Affordable Care grant funding was awarded to 266 health centers across the U.S., District Of Columbia, and Puerto Rico last year. Sun Life Family Health Center was one of five Arizona health centers to receive those ACA grant monies, along with Adelante Healthcare, North Country HealthCare, Sunset Community Health Center, and Valle del Sol centers.

Sun Life Director of Operations Kim Collins explained that the reason why Florence was chosen as the site of a new office was due to the results from their 2013 community needs assessment. It identified the Florence area as the second highest need for uninsured and underinsured patients, Collins said.

The practice located at 150 S. Main Street in Florence, AZ, has been owned and operated by Dr. Lawrence Bence Dr. Lawrence Bencein Florence for the past 23 years.

"We are very honored that Dr. Bence and his staff working chose to stay on with Sun Life," Sun Life CEO Travis Robinette said. "We are confident that Florence residents will continue to get the same great service at our location in Florence. It’s the same team Florence knows, under a different name."

Dr. Bence (pictured right) was born and raised in Chicago, Ill. Majoring in biology, he completed his undergraduate studies at MacMurray College in Jacksonville, Ill, and went on to continue with his medical training at the University of Illinois College of Medicine. He graduated with his medical degree in 1974.

He did his internship at the San Francisco US Public Health Service Hospital and his externship at Chicago Municipal Contagious Disease Hospital. He practiced general medicine in Chicago at a private medical clinic until 1986 when he moved to Casa Grande, Ariz. He practiced at the Casa Grande Medical Clinic and admitted patients to Casa Grande Regional Medical Center until April 1992. After that, Dr. Bence opened up his own medical practice in Florence, where he has been for 23 years.

"I'm excited to start practicing medicine with Sun Life," Dr. Bence stated. "I feel that Sun Life Family Health Center will be a great addition to Florence."

In addition to providing high quality medical care for his patients, Dr. Bence also enjoys golf, snow skiing, bicycling and working out.

“I have an anti-aging philosophy,” he added. “Medication can help in some instances. However, there is no magic pill that will keep you fit and in shape. Exercise, eating healthy, getting enough sleep are a major part of taking care of one’s health and is a very important part of staying and feeling young.”

Dr. Bence has four children and two grandchildren, with whom he enjoys spending time.

Hours of operation for the new Florence office will be Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. In addition to regular care that has been available in Florence, Sun Life's new office will also start taking patients with AHCCCS insurance.
